Provincial: Nova Scotia

Area 24 Snow Crab and Crab Fishery Advisory Board
Bob Anderson, Cecil Cashin, Kevin Horne
The representatives from the association are involved in the development of management plans and an extensive science program for the area snow crab fishery. 

Area 29 Scallop Fishery Advisory Committee
David Murphy
This committee advises on the management plans for the inshore scallop fishery.

Development Species Advisory Board

This was a board formed from existing fishermen's associations to look at applications or interest in new and expanding fisheries. The board is made up two members from each association covering Halifax to Cape Breton.

Eastern Nova Herring and Mackerel Advisory Committee

This committee dealt with issues concerning the inshore fishery and the representative also represents this group on the Scotia Fundy Herring Advisory Committee. They were instrumental in stopping the large herring seiners from dumping small dead herring in the Chedabucto Bay.

Eastern Nova Scotia Whelk Advisory Committee

This is a new species development board for the whelk fishery, which is still in the emerging science stage of development. The guys are working toward a gear choice and grid areas for the fishery as well as completing a data set for stack analysis.

Eastern Scotian Shelf Integrated Management Plan (ESSIM)

Our rep from GCIFA sits on this board to help develop an oceans management plan for all ocean users. The plan is a joint effort form many stakeholders and all industries of oceans users are represented including community representation. The final plan has been submitted in 2007, to the Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for approval.

Eastern Shore Groundfish Management Board

Fishermen from the association sit on this committee to look after our interest in the management of the ground fishery. Anyone wishing to attend any groundfish meeting with our represented is more than welcome.

Eastern Shore Herring Roe Fishery Committee

This is an advisory board where fishermen representatives deal with the management of the inshore herring fishery.

Lobster Advisory Board
LFA 29 - Robert Welsh, LFA 31A - Eugene O’Leary and Mike Duquette, LFA 31B Cecil Cashin and Glenn Langley
This board advises the LFA's on lobster management plans, conservation measures and science programs.

Nova Scotia Fishery Sector Council

The GCIFA member sit son this board to advise and develop industry related training programs and certification for all fishermen in the industry.

Nova Scotia Mackerel Association
Ken Snow
This association looks after the interest of the Mackerel fishermen. As an association we also sit on the Advisory Board and have input into decisions concerning the mackerel fishery.

Offshore Petroleum Board

This board allows our fisheries representative to look out for the fisheries interest in the offshore development of natural gas and its possible impact on the inshore fishery.

Scotia Fundy Fishing Sector Industry Roundtable

A board of fishing industry representatives from harvesters, buyers, managers, processors and science representatives set to discuss issues relating to the total industry perspective.

Scotia Fundy Large Pelagic Advisory Committee

This committee is similar to the ALPAC, but only this committee deals with one fleet sector.

Scotia Fundy Professionalization Interim Board
Ken Snow
This board is set up by the fishermen to direct the industry in the advancement of Professionalization Certification in the fishing industry.

Shrimp Trap Harvesters' Association

The representatives for the shrimp trap fishery in Chedabucto Bay are busy developing their management plans, science programs and also work with local buyers, Provincial fisheries Dept and Ecology Action Centre to develop a new niche local market of their shrimp.

Atlantic

Atlantic Fishing Industry Alliance

This Alliance was formed in October of 1999 after the Supreme Court of Canada made a decision on the Marshall Case. This Alliance provides the fishing industry with a voice and an information liaison to better understand the new First Nations Participation into the Atlantic Fishery.

Atlantic Large Pelagic Advisory Committee

An Advisory Board consisting of the four Atlantic Provinces and Quebec. Representatives of all large Pelagic (Swordfish, Shark and Tuna) meet with DFO and DFO science to discuss the fishery. Quotas are discussed and advice on how to better manage/distribute the resource. This is one place presentations are made in an attempt for outsiders to access this fishery. The association worked through this group to obtain 10 new Tuna Licenses (We now represent these license holders on this committee.)

Eastern Fishermen's Federation

The EFF is made up of 24 Fishing Associations from P.E.I., N.S., N.B., and Quebec. Each association is represented by one Director and deals mostly with Motherhood issues in the fisheries and provides information for our association. This Federation was formed in 1979 by fishermen and had a capital fund from a squid allocation that was set up by former Fisheries Minister, Romeo Leblanc.

Fisherman and Scientist Research Society
Jerry Creamer – Director, Ken Snow, Billy Bond - Science Committee
The Fisherman and Scientist Research Society is a partnership between fishermen and scientists that provides training to fishermen and allows for better understanding between the two groups. Their main objective is to learn more about the fish stocks in the area. Its fishermen learning from scientist and for scientist for the first time taking into account the value of fishermen's knowledge, amassed over the years. GCIFA members deploy temperature gauges, as well as participating in the lobster recruitment study for many years.

Maritimes Region Lobster Advisory Committee
All GCIFA LFA reps will be permitted to participation this committee where many industry reps from various sectors come together to discuss lobster fishery management, science and markets.

National

Canadian Marine Advisory Council

Is an advisory board comprised of fishermen, boat builders, pleasure boat operators or any interested group that may be affected by rules and regulations that are made by Transport Canada and Marine Safety. This advisory board is an open process and any individual may make a presentation.
